The Greek vases offered here have relatively large openings at the top because they are commonly used for holding flowers or ornamentations. Some of the Greek vases or grecian urns have elaborate reliefs with full body figures shown in full profile with long legs and fine tenuous muscularity. Other vases and urns have are sculpted with abstract foliage to accent its general shape.

The earliest Greek vases were known as geometrical style and were adorned with brown pigmented paint. These were produced from about the 12th century B.C. thru 8th century B.C. The artists of the day used stick-like figures of men and animals. It was only in later periods that figures of men and gods began to be become more realistic and were painted in black to contrast with the vase red clay base material. During the 6th century B.C. this was reversed by leaving the figures in the vase red clay base material untouched and instead they painted in the background details with black pigments.
