L David Statue The original sculpture of David by Michelangelo had begun to be worked on in 1501, and by 1504 the David sculpture was in place outside the Palazzo Vecchio. Michelangelo was commissioned to create the marble David sculpture by the Arte della Lana (Guild of Wool Merchant), who were responsible for the upkeep and the decoration of the Cathedral in Florence.
