M Venus De Milo

In spite of certain blatant lacking attributes, like arms, the size and the immortal attitude of this de Milo sculpture of Venus allow for its identification as a goddess. The de Milo Venus, goddess of the sea, was venerated on the island of Melos in the Greek civilization. The style is characteristic of the late Hellenistic period, which revives classical art themes while innovating new ones. De Milo's slipping drapery on the hips suggests a closed stance and introduces us instantly to the sculpture. The drapery on the sculpture of Venus serves to hide the joint between the two blocks of marble that were sculpted by separate artists, as were the left arm and leg, in order to restore the art piece.
