XL Aries God of War Bust Mars, the Roman God of war, was also known as Aries to the Greeks. Their names are perfectly interchangeable. From the time of Homer, the god Mars was one of the Olympian deities, the son of Zeus and Hera, but disliked by the other Roman god figures. Worship to the god Mars occurred largely in north Greece. He was associated from early times with Aphrodite, occasionally portrayed as his legitimate wife and at other times his lover.
