S Winged Victory

The original goddess Nike statue was eight feet tall and was created by a Rhodian sculptor sometime around 200 BC. The Nike statue was discovered on the Aegean island of Samothrace in 1863. Since then the has been known as "Victory" and is on permanent display at the Louvre museum in Paris. Translated "Victory", the goddess Nike is the Greek word for "victory" and was depicted in many statues as a female figure with wings. Later it became a standard for men of the sea to christen the front of their ships with a statue of the likeness of Nike/Victory.
