XL Winged Victory
The original heavenly angel
statue, Nike of Samothrace came from an island
in the North Aegean Sea, was discovered in 1863
by archaeologist Charles Champoiseau with the
pieces scattered across the side of a hill. Although
the angel head was never located, the 118 pieces
of the art that were found were later painstakingly
assembled at The Louvre. Though the heavenly angel
statue is commonly known as "Winged Victory"
her true title is Nike. Nike angel statues like
her were most common around 190-220 BC. The "original"
is now in the Musee de Louvre in Paris, France.
The function of the angel goddess was to stand
on the prow of the galley on a ship, resisting
ocean waves and gusts of wind her right arm was
undoubtedly held pointed high. It was an ex-voto
angel statue of the Rhodians for a victory won
at the beginning of the 2nd Century BC.
